Starting college is exciting—but figuring out what to bring to your dorm can feel overwhelming fast. Most freshman dorms are small, shared, and minimally furnished, so packing smart is key. This guide breaks down exactly what you need (and what you don’t) so you can walk into move-in day prepared and stress-free.
🛏️ Bedroom Essentials
Your dorm room is your home base, so comfort matters.
Must-haves:
• Twin XL bedding (sheets, comforter, pillows)
We recommend having two sets to rotate because of laundry and season. The dorms temperatures will fluxuate and not with the season......lol
• Mattress topper (game changer for comfort)
• Blanket/throw
• Bedside caddy or small table
• Alarm clock (or phone stand)
Pro tip: Dorm mattresses are notoriously uncomfortable—don’t skip the topper.
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MATTRESS TOPPER AND A MATTRESS PAD.
We have found most of our client's have chosen the LUCID mattress topper.

👕 Clothing & Laundry
You won’t need your entire wardrobe—just plan for the season and easy layering.
If you have THE LAUNDRY CO laundry service and FREE storage, many of our clients leave their seasonal items stored and then exchange out bins or boxes when they need their winter items or their spring items. At IU, you will have three seasons: FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL and LITTLE 500.
Essentials:
• Everyday clothes (2–3 weeks worth)
• Pajamas & loungewear
• Shower shoes (flip-flops)
• Jacket/coat depending on climate
• Laundry basket or hamper
• Detergent & dryer sheets
• Stain remover
Nice-to-have:
• Drying rack (many dorm dryers shrink clothes)
⸻
🚿 Bathroom Supplies
If you have a shared or communal bathroom, portability is key.
Must-haves:
• Shower caddy
• Towels (2–3 sets)
• Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.)
• Shower shoes
• Robe (optional but helpful)
⸻
📚 School & Study Supplies
Even if you go digital, you’ll still want a functional study setup.
Essentials:
• Laptop & charger
• Notebooks or binders
• Pens, pencils, highlighters
• Backpack
• Desk lamp (if not provided)
• Planner or digital calendar system
⸻
🍜 Food & Kitchen Basics
Most dorms don’t allow full kitchens, but you’ll want snacks and quick meals.
Must-haves:
• Mini fridge (coordinate with roommate)
• Microwave (if allowed)
• Reusable water bottle
• Coffee maker or electric kettle (if permitted)
Extras:
• Snacks
• Paper plates, bowls, utensils
• Dish soap & sponge
⸻
🧼 Cleaning & Health
Dorms can get messy quickly—especially with roommates.
Essentials:
• Disinfecting wipes
• Paper towels
• Trash bags
• Air freshener
• Basic first aid kit
• Medications (pain relievers, cold medicine)
⸻
🔌 Tech & Electrical
Dorms rarely have enough outlets.
Must-haves:
• Power strip (with surge protection)
• Extension cords (check dorm rules)
• Phone charger(s)
• Headphones
⸻
🧺 Storage & Organization
Dorm rooms are small—organization is everything.
Essentials:
• Under-bed storage bins
• Closet organizers
• Hangers
• Drawer dividers
⸻
🎨 Personal Touches
This is what turns your dorm from “room” into “home.”
Ideas:
• Photos of family & friends
• Posters or wall art (use removable strips)
• String lights (if allowed)
• Small rug
• Plants (real or fake)
⸻
🚫 What NOT to Bring
Avoid clutter and rule violations.
• Too many clothes
• Large furniture
• Candles (usually banned)
• Expensive valuables
• Full kitchen appliances (check rules first)
⸻
🤝 Roommate Tip
Before move-in, connect with your roommate and coordinate shared items like:
• Mini fridge
• Microwave
• TV
• Cleaning supplies
This saves space and money.
⸻
Final Thought
You don’t need to bring everything on day one. Start with the basics, then adjust after a few weeks once you know what you actually use.
College is about experiences—not stuff. Pack smart, keep it simple, and you’ll be ready for an amazing freshman year.
