Updated: Apr 13

Breaking down the Neighborhoods:

🧭 QUICK CHEAT SHEET (what matters most)

🥇 Best Bathrooms (PRIVATE / SUITE)

• Briscoe

• Walnut Grove

• Read

• Spruce

• Willkie

🥇 Best Dining INSIDE

• Wright

• McNutt

• Forest

• Collins

• Ashton

🥇 Most Social / Freshman Energy

• McNutt (Walnut Grove, Foster and Briscoe all surround McNutt)-GREAT ENERGY

• Teter

• Wright

🥇 Best Overall Dorm Quality

• Walnut Grove (newest)

• Briscoe (best bathrooms)

• Union Street (apartment style)

⸻

💡 Bottom Line

• Traditional dorms (Wright, Teter, Ashton, Eigenmann) = shared bathrooms

• Newer dorms (Briscoe, Walnut, Spruce, Read) = suite-style bathrooms

• Dining halls are NOT everywhere — only a few dorms have them

• Room types = mostly doubles across campus

🍽️ Dorms WITH Dining Halls (on-site)

These are the ONLY residence areas where the dining hall is inside the dorm area:

✅ 1. Wright Quad

• Has Wright Dining Hall

✅ 2. McNutt Quad

• Has McNutt Dining Hall

✅ 3. Forest Quad

• Has Forest Dining Hall

✅ 4. Collins Living-Learning Center

• Has Collins Eatery (dining hall)

✅ 5. Goodbody Hall

• Has Goodbody Eatery (smaller but still all-you-care-to-eat)

👉 These are the official IU “all-you-care-to-eat” dining hall locations

⸻

❌ Dorms WITHOUT Dining Halls (but nearby)

These dorms do NOT have their own cafeteria inside, but are usually close to one:

• Teter Quad → next to Wright dining

• Briscoe Quad → near McNutt dining

• Foster Quad → near McNutt dining

• Walnut Grove → near McNutt dining

• Read Hall → near Forest dining

• Spruce Hall → near Forest dining

• Wells Quad → near Forest dining

• Ashton → near Wright dining

• Eigenmann → has café (not full dining hall) within walking distance of both WRIGHT and FOREST.

• Willkie → no dining hall, within walking distance of FOREST

⸻

🧠 Important Insight (most people don’t realize)

• IU is set up so you don’t need a dining hall in your dorm

• Each neighborhood has at least one dining hall

• You can eat at ANY dining hall on campus, not just yours

⸻

🔑 Bottom Line

If having a cafeteria inside your dorm matters, choose:

👉 Wright, McNutt, Forest, Collins, or Goodbody

If not, you’ll still be within a 5–10 minute walk max from food anywhere on campus.

There are total 19 housing options.

WRIGHT QUAD----The latest to be Renovated.

⸻

🏢 Wright Quad Basics

• 553 rooms total

• ~1,034 beds (students)

• Organized into 18 “houses” (smaller dorm sections)

⸻

🧺 Laundry Rooms

• Wright Quad has laundry rooms in the basement/ground level of buildings (houses)

• Since there are 18 houses, there are multiple laundry areas, not just one central room.

👉 Translation:

• You’ll definitely have a laundry room in your building/house, not far away

• But IU does not publish an exact count of laundry rooms

⸻

🚿 Bathrooms (VERY important)

• Wright Quad is a traditional dorm, so:

• Mostly communal (shared) bathrooms on each floor

• At IU generally, communal bathrooms are:

• Shared by ~40–50 people per floor

👉 So:

• ❌ Not private in most cases

• ❌ Not “suite-style”

• ✅ Shared hallway bathrooms (typical freshman dorm experience)

⸻

🛏️ Room Types

Wright is traditional-style housing, meaning:

Main room types:

• Double rooms (MOST common)

• Single rooms (limited)

👉 Important:

• ❌ No standard “quads” (4 people in one room)

• ❌ No apartment-style layouts

• ✅ Mostly 1 or 2 people per room

⸻

🍽️ Dining / Cafeteria

Yes — and this is a big plus.

• Wright Quad has its own:

• Full dining hall (“all-you-care-to-eat”)

• Convenience store (C-store)

👉 You don’t have to leave the building area to eat.

⸻

🧠 Quick Reality Summary (what parents & students care about)

Pros:

• Central location on campus

• Has its own dining hall

• Multiple laundry areas

• Budget-friendly housing

Cons:

• Shared bathrooms (biggest drawback)

• Older layout (though renovated recently)

• Smaller rooms

⸻

🔑 Bottom Line

• Laundry: Multiple rooms across the 18 houses (not just one)

• Rooms: Mostly doubles, some singles

• Bathrooms: Shared communal (not private)

• Dining: YES — full cafeteria inside
